School Crossing Guard

Summary

Under the general supervision of a designated Sergeant; responsible for safely escorting elementary and middle school children across street intersections within marked crosswalks. Work is reviewed through observation in progress and reports for adherence to established policies and procedures.

Essential functions

  • Use gaps in traffic to permit school children to cross the road safely.
  • Control the children congregated at street crossing points and permit children to cross the street only when they can safely do so.
  • Report to school authorities children who do not follow safety rules.
  • Instruct children in elements of traffic safety.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to remain calm in confrontational situations.
  • Get along with children and maintain their respect and obedience.
  • Instruct children in elements of traffic safety.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws relating to pedestrian right of way, speed, speed limits in school zones, traffic safety, traffic hazard identification, traffic control devices, vehicle identification, filing reports, emergency procedures and school schedules.
  • Observe and remember details of traffic incidents; provide for maximum safety of the pedestrian crossing the street without reasonable inconvenience to motorists.
  • Stand for several hours and be outside in all kinds of weather.

Environmental

Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Physical

Vision and hearing sufficient to perceive potential traffic hazards, detect warning signals, traffic control devices and other indicators of potentially hazardous to swiftly remove pedestrians from dangerous traffic situations; standing, walking, speaking and hearing.

Sensory

Tasks require color, sound, depth and visual perception and discrimination and oral communication ability.

Minimum

Must be at least 18 years of age and have not been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor(s) involving moral turpitude. Veterans of military service must have been honorably discharged.

Employees in this position are required to pass the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment and the ICS-100 within 60 days of employment.
