Equipment Operator I – Streets

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs construction, maintenance and repair of municipal streets and storm water drains for the City’s Public Works Department   Work is performed under general supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Position relies on expertise and experience, following established policies and procedures to perform job duties.  Work is reviewed through observation for compliance with work orders and established policies and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

NOTE:  The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

Operate a wide range of automotive vehicles, power and hand tools that may include, backhoe, fork lift, tractor, street roller, street sweeper, compressor, dump truck, front-end loader, trencher, drill, quickie saws and jackhammer.

Transport equipment and materials to and from job sites; transport maintenance workers to work site; haul refuse, brush, rock, materials and equipment.

Repair pot holes, roads and curbs; dig, form, pour and finish concrete work; raise and lower manholes; remove trees, brush and other debris from roads; clean storm drains; clean and repair storm water drains.

Inspect and maintain assigned equipment; check oil and perform basic service tasks; report malfunctions; prepare equipment; wash and fuel equipment.

Communicate effectively with all staff, vendors and the public.

Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

Perform other work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.

Knowledge of operation and routine maintenance of lightweight equipment.

Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.

Ability to operate a variety of automotive vehicles, light equipment, various hand and power tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by 2 years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of medium and heavy equipment. Any combination of at least two of Backhoe, excavator, or skid steer experience required.

CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE:  All certifications must be current at the time of application and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver License Class “B” or higher with air brake endorsement or have the permit and ability to get the license within 6 months of hire.

Must complete the basic Work zone safety certification within 1st year of hire.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Environmental

Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Physical

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.

Sensory

Tasks require manual dexterity in addition to visual and hearing acuity as well as oral communication ability.
