Equipment Operator I- Streets

General Purpose

This position is involves the construction, maintenance and repair of municipal streets and storm water drains. Work is reviewed through observation for compliance with work orders and established policies and procedures.

Examples of Essential functions

Operate a wide range of automotive vehicles, power and hand tools that may include, backhoe, fork lift, tractor, street roller, street sweeper, compressor, dump truck, front-end loader, trencher, drill, quickie saws and jackhammer.

Transport equipment and materials to and from job sites; transport maintenance workers to work site; haul refuse, brush, rock, materials and equipment.

Repair pot holes, roads and curbs; dig, form, pour and finish concrete work; raise and lower manholes; remove trees, brush and other debris from roads; clean storm drains; clean and repair storm water drains.

Inspect and maintain assigned equipment; check oil and perform basic service tasks; report malfunctions; prepare equipment; wash and fuel equipment.

Perform manual labor as required.

Minimum Experience

Two years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of medium and heavy equipment. Must have a Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” or higher with air brake endorsement or have the permit and ability to get the license within 6 months of hire. Employee must complete the basic Work zone safety certification within 1st year of hire.

Employees in this position are required to pass the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment and the ICS-100 within 60 days of employment.

Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.


Tasks require standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, pushing, pulling, climbing, speaking and lifting of 20 lb or more.


Tasks require color, visual and hearing perception and discrimination and oral and written communication ability.
